This week, the crew building the newest Disney Cruise ship, the Disney Dream, celebrated laying the keel of the ship. The Disney Dream is the first of two new ships Disney's building to expand it's fleet of family cruise ships.
The ship is currently scheduled to join the fleet in 2011 and both new Disney ships will call Port Canaveral, Florida their home port.
The keel laying ceremony traditionally marks the momentous occasion in the ship building process when the first block (section) is lowered into the building dock. At this time, for good luck and fortune, a coin is placed under the keel.
The Disney Dream will continue to be built in "blocks." Pre-fabricated sections of the hull (known as blocks) will be joined together to form the entire ship. The Disney Dream will consist of 80 blocks, each weighing in at 380 tons!!
