Yesterday, we made a quick day trip to Downtown Disney to attend the grand opening of the new T-Rex Restaurant. T-Rex is Disney World's newest restaurant. Landry's Restaurants owns T-Rex, as well as many other restaurants on Disney property, including The Rain Forest Cafes and Yak and Yeti.
We arrived about an hour before the 4PM opening time and this put us somewhere between 50 and 100 people back in the line. You can see the line in the video I posted, below.
After the 4PM opening time arrived, we quickly entered the restaurant to be greeted by a family of animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex. The restaurant has three sections, Fire, Ice, and Water. We were taken around the bar to the Water section of the restaurant. Every fifteen minutes or so, the restaurant has a "meteor" shower with flashing lights, the walls change colors, and loud, thundering noises. You will also see this in the video, although certain parts are very dark, you will hear the thundering noise in the background and the flickering light in the ceiling.
Our service was excellent! Our server was very friendly, took pictures of the whole family, gave us lots of useful information about the restaurant, and promptly served our food and drinks. Other servers from other sections were also very willing to lend assistance, whenever requested.
I had the "Tribal Tacos," which were essentially fish tacos. You could get the fish grilled or blackened. I, of course, chose blackened.
Years ago, I worked in Southern California and had the best fish tacos of my life; purchased at any taco stand in SoCal. Since returning to Florida, I've never been able to find a fish taco that's even tolerable. T-Rex has solved this problem. While I do not believe any taco will match those I ate in Cali, T-Rex does an excellent job coming close. I would even call them good fish tacos.
My wife had the chicken salad sandwich and she loved it! It was a bit more food than she could handle, so it came home with us. The kids each had a pizza and we had either soda or juices to drink. Our total, with tip, came to about $75. A little pricey for what really amounted to lunch and sandwich fare, but also very good and with excellent service.
The restaurant also has a gift store, with a very special "Build-A-Dino" shop. The "Build-A-Dino" shop is a partner of the "Build-A-Bear" shops, but it has all dinosaurs, outfits, and accessories that are exclusive to the "Build-A-Dino" shops. They also have a "Discovery Creek" area where you can sift through a bag of sand (purchased at the gift store) to find "dinosaur" bones. Adjacent to the "Creek," they have a dig site for the kids to play while waiting for a table or just for fun!
